Newborn Lotions

So I've read lotions with scent and color are a no go for babies. That being said, I read a lot about mommas putting lavender lotion on their baby's at night in their bedtime routine to help the baby recognize it's time to sleep, and also to help them sleep. What lotion do you use, if any and at what age? I'm confused! I don't want to bathe him every night cause I don't want to dry out his skin...so I'd love to do lotion in it's place to get him in a bedtime routine.
