Giving baby water? 💧

My pediatrician told me to give my 6 month old 8 oz of water a day. I was surprised that it is so much. How much water do you give your little one?

That's strange that your dr said that. Breast fed babies don't need ANYTHING but breastmilk. At 6 months, you can begin solids but as for water, only enough to wash food down if necessary. Filling up on water keeps them from being hungry for the milk they need VERY MUCH STILL.

I'd say no more than 2-4 oz for a breastfed baby but I'm not sure if formula fed babies are different. My baby didn't start wanting water until about 8 months and it's slowly increased but is still under 4. You don't want them to fill up on water in my opinion cause they need the nutrition from formula/breastmilk.

My baby was formula fed and I didn't give him water until he was almost one. What is the purpose to give them that much water so young? No more than 2 ounces.

I’d probably listen to your dr who knows the specifics of your child instead of a bunch of moms on here. Just my opinion but you chose that dr because you trusted they were the best to manage your child’s health right?

8oz sounds like a lot. My pediatrician said the main concern is you don’t want to replace feedings/have baby get full with water. I guess if it was spaced throughout the day so it doesn’t affect their breastmilk/formula intake it would be ok 🤷🏻‍♀️ 
At 6 months I offered 2oz of water after she ate some solids. She never finished the water though. 
Now at 8 months, she LOVES water and drinks maybe 2oz of water, twice a day.

Thank you ladies!!! This what I was thinking too. She's EBF... She is in the 75th percentile for growth but still. The doc didn't give me a rationale, she made it seem like it was normal but I agree with the consensus here, 2oz, maybe 4oz max... but 8oz seems like way too much.

I’d find a new doctor. Seriously. I’ve worked with kids for years and know that babies should not be drinking water. Especially that much. Its just not needed before the age of 1 and it’s actually quite dangerous if you give them too much.

Did they give you a reason? Did your baby jump dramatically in weight and throw off their growth curve? Ask the pediatrician for the rationale before deciding.
