Baby's last name?

Hi! So I am 38 weeks pregnant, expecting to give birth any day now. And I have been going back and forth in my head about who's last name I want the baby to have. My boyfriend and I have been together for 3 years now, and live together (unmarried). I would like to get married eventually but he hasn't asked yet and I'm not sure about his intentions on that. I have no doubt about him being a great father but I don't want to end up in a situation where we're not together anymore (if we split up down the road) and I have to carry around his last name with our daughter. He wants the baby to have his and I want her to have mine. I want both of us to come to a compromise because at the end of the day we are both equal parents to her, but we can't seem to come to a compromise. 
 I was born to unmarried parents and I had my moms last name until my dad married her years later. I think that's how it should be if you're unmarried. What are your thoughts and opinions? Thank you!!

I've read a very similar post like this before🤔. It's unfair not to give your child her fathers last name bc he hasn't ask to marry you. That has nothing to do with what kind of father he will be & you yourself even stated he would be a great father. I've had my father last name all my life and my parents never married. You can compromise and give her both but you can't take that away from him just bc he won't marry you.

I think it's wrong not to give her his last name. Even if y'all split he helped create that beautiful baby and she will always be his daughter. I find it disrespectful especially being in a relationship with the father and wanting to get married down the road ...

Idk if it’s how i was raised, but my son has his dads last name. Only because I knew he would be a great dad and we’ve been together almost 5yrs. I also have my dads last name and my parents were never married and they’re still together.. 27yrs actually.

Ultimately you will make the choice. I was in the exact same situation! I did end up giving my son his dad’s last name. And we did end up marrying  2 years later. Now we all have the same last name. But I’m not going to lie. There were times when I wished I gave my son my name. It doesn’t matter now as we are a family of 4 (soon 5) all sharing the same name. So if you do plan to marry then it makes sense to give your baby his name.

My daughter has her father's last name, and I wouldn't change that for anything.  Then again we were a little unique and had a plan in case things didn't work out (and so far have followed it with no issues for a little over 2 years). My husband now has had the issue with his ex that she filed to change his sons last name to hers, and that started when we got engaged.She was citing things like "it will be easier for me to do things for him (ie school registration, doctors, etc) if he has the same name" as her, to which I call bs because I've had that for 6 years so far with my daughter and have never had even one issue with our last names not being the same.                                                                                   My oppinion is unless your child's father signs over his rights and doesn't want the child in his life, then the child needs to have his last name.

I gave my daughter her father’s last name and we weren’t married. He was still my boyfriend for about another 3 years until we got married. I think that if you want the baby to have your last name and the fathers just hyphenate it (last-name)

If it's his child and he's involved by all means he has every right to want his child to have his last name. That's what your supposed to do anyway!Marrying you has nothing to do with your child have her rightful name! That's just crazy to me that your even questioning that! If I was a man a woman told me she didn't want my child to have my last name I'd take her to court do a paternity test and gain my rights as her/his father!
