6 week ultrasound

I went to the doctor for first time with my first pregnancy. He completed an ultrasound. You could see the sac but the heart beat was not visible all the time. it was beating but then he couldn't find it. He said he thinks it's the view and possibly not as far along as we thought. Has anyone experienced this before?
