What does “taking a break” mean?

Was it cheating when Ross hooked up with that other girl after Rachel suggested taking a break? Wtf does it even mean to be “on a break”?

Okay!!! So in my opinion, it was cheating. They got in an argument and Rachel said “maybe we should take a break from us” THAT’S ALL SHE SAID. He left and then hooked up with some girl???? Hell no, they didn’t even discuss it.

IMO if you're taking a break you HAVE to discuss whether or not you're going to stay faithful. I have been on a break where we just didn't talk for 2 weeks to see if we were happier apart, but we agreed we wouldn't sleep with other people. Their break was flawed from the start because they weren't clear.

I honestly never understood the concept, so I would never use the term in a relationship I cared about. I think to a lot of people taking a break means you're broken up with the potential to get back together, so whatever you do while on a break isn't considered cheating. It's really a messy and confusing term, it's why I would never agree to going on a break, because it can be interpreted differently by people. I'd just break up or make up.

I’ve never done it myself but I personally think it’s some time apart to decide if the relationship is really what you both want. 
I would still class it as cheating though. If you want to sleep with other people then call it quits straight up.

No, they were on a break. In my opinion, when you’re on a break, you’re broken up. I mean there’d be no reason for a break if said people aren’t gonna break up.

🤷🏻‍♂️ my bf and I took a break for a month. We hit the two year mark and it was just, a lot. He was really struggling with anxiety/depression, I moved to another state, etc. as a break is basically being separated we were fine with whatever the other did outside of our relationship (we didn’t do anything lol)  
He visited his physicians and got some medication. Really came to terms and owned up to being the spike in the road of our relationship. At the end of the month we went on a vacay with his family for a week and decided at the end of the stay that we would be together. Now he’s off meds and 100%:>. 
Breaks may not be for everybody, it’s really just how a couple copes. I personally expect 18-29’s to use “breaks” more than other age groups because there’s a lot of life punching you and sculpting you into a different person than when the relationship started.

I don’t believe in breaks. So personally taking a break to me means that it’s over. As for Ross and Rachel’s situation, I don’t think it was cheating. Rachel did clearly say that they needed a break from each other, so I think Ross assumed that it was over. He’s always loved Rachel so I don’t think what he did was cheating, but that doesn’t mean it was right. Just my viewpoint.
