Can a company let their employees they have to keep working until the employer says?

My company is very understaffed and very busy. First they required people to work an hour after their shift. Fine, not a big deal. Now they are saying everyone have to stay logged on (we work from home for a healthcare company) until management says we can log off. This can't be legal. People have lives, kids and other responsibilities. People already work their 8 hour shift (through lunch) and are now required to stay on 3-4 more hours!

Did they have you sign papers when you were hired? Sometimes they put that in small print, especially for call center and computer jobs. I would double check that. If you did sign a paper for it, there's nothing you can do, besides of course quit. And then if not there should be a labor bureau in your city/state you can contact and they should be able to help you and answer whether or not this is legal in your state.

i worked in the medical field, I worked 6 days a week 12 hr days, most days it ended up being 16hr days, I always just figured it came with the territory, plus more $$$$
