Hi I'm new
Yesterday was supposed to be such a happy day. We went in at 18 weeks 3 days for an anatomy scan and to find out the gender. We were told we were having a little girl. My husband, 3 year old son, and I were so excited. Then our world felt like it came crashing down. We were told we had become high risk because our sweet girl was missing part of her vertebrae, could only find one kidney, her umbilical cord didn't have enough chambers (which also leads them to believe one kidney), and her heart is normal right now but they can't rule it ok right now. We are military so we have been transferred off post to a high risk dr. We also need to be seen in Denver for an MRI. Once they do the MRI they will be able to tell exactly what we are dealing with. If Denver is alarmed then we will have to deliver there. But it sounds like if it's serious or not so serious she's going to need surgery on her spine after birth. They said there is a tiny chance the MRI will show nothing wrong but there's so many red flags that's not very likely. The dr said she didn't think this was chromosomal issues, spins bifida, or potentially life threatening but can't say for sure. The one big positive in all if this was she was moving her legs during the scan. I just don't want her to be in pain or to struggle growing up. Or I don't want her to need surgery after surgery and not be able to enjoy life. I just want her to be healthy.
Update: it's been a while but wanted to update you all. So we had our appointment in Aurora and it went better then I expected. So looks like she does have both kidneys however only one is currently functioning. It looks like the right one had a blockage and she wasn't able to pee. So it's a little deformed and has cysts all over it. It is also lower in her pelvis (which could be from the spine deformity but not sure). So the plan is to do an ultrasound 48 hours after she's born to see if it is functioning. If it is great if not they aren't concerned and she will love a healthy life with one kidney. As for the spine she has all the vertebrae but instead of curving in at the bottom hers curves out and her spinal cord is longer then it's supposed to be. So when they do the ultrasound on the kidneys they want one done of the spine. If the cord looks tethered she goes back to Aurora for an MRI to see if it is and they will unclip it. For the curve they want to monitor it and if it stays the same that's the best out come and she won't need intervention. If it gets slightly worse she'll need a brace and physical therapy but if it gets really bad she will need either staples or a rod to straighten it. We were given the option to deliver on post with a high risk or off post with high risk. I think we are going to choose off post only because they have a NICU for just in case. But also the pediatricians will be more experienced with something like this. The obs on post are ready to take us on but can't say the same for the preds. So we figure why go on post and have to wait for a referral off post if the peds don't want to see her. So everything else looked great and she's healthy other than these issues. So if you could continue to pray that she is born healthy and these won't affect her life when she gets older.
