Best animal for children?

Question

I really want to get my son a pet, I was thinking a puppy. But it would have to be relatively small for where we live. And can’t shed TOO much as my son has allergies. 
But I feel a fish is boring for a toddler lol. I grew up with dogs and I think it’s such a great experience for children to have pets. 
Any suggestions?

Please don't get a puppy, puppies are high maintenance and you might end up abandoning it. 
I'd suggest getting an older pup, a terrier sounds like what you are looking for. 
Toddlers can be really harsh when handling animals, so that can be a problem too...wait for your kid to be 4 years old or older

Babies and toddlers are quite rough on animals. An older dog who is patient would be best. But a small dog rarely is patient and can be injured very easily. We have a three year old German Shepard lab mix. She loves kids and they can be rough with her. If she is sick of it she gets up and walks away. She has been around kids from infancy to 6 years old. She is super patient and loves kids.

My coworkers daughter was 2 when she had her first fish, and loved it!! Got to feed him and pick out the things that decorated his tank. It starts them off with a small, easy responsibility, feed the fish. Tada! We have a dog, but we had him before our first child. So he wasnt in the puppy phase during the baby phase. If you're set on a dog, adopt a pet who's already a couple years old. The humane society will usually have a workup "good with kids, easy tempered" etc. That will probably go better than a toddler and a puppy. 😁😜💕

If you do get a pet, please get an adult who's been proven around little kids! You can't predict adult personality from a baby animal, and you don't want your kiddo getting bit or scratched by a puppy or kitten who doesn't know any better.

Dogs are amazing but definitely look for an older relaxed dog. Small doesn’t always mean better btw! My 90 lb American Foxhound is AMAZING with kids. He is so relaxed and anyone can lay on him and mess with him and he is always calm. So just take the time to find the right dog for you.

Cavalier King charles we have two and are so loving to our children. And not to energetic so don't need all the attention

I had a turtle in my classroom and fish and the children loved them. And they are both fairly low maintenance.  
I would avoid getting a dog until your certain that your son doesn’t have allergies to cats or dogs. Because a low shedding dog isn’t going to solve an allergy problem and depending on the allergy the “hypo allergenic dogs” won’t either. Some people are allergic to pet dander and some to the pets saliva. So if he has allergies I would wait until he’s old enough to be tested and you can figure out if he has an allergy to pets.

Puppies are SO MUCH work. I’d get a small breed with hypoallergenic fur that is around 2 or 3 years old.
