What’s the best way to diaper a newborn?

I’ve been planning to cloth diaper since before I even became pregnant, but now that as of today I have my positive I suppose it’s time to start really considering the details. I think I want to do pocket one sizes, but I haven‘t decided how I want to do it before baby will fit the ones sizes. I read that fitteds are best for newborns because of the absorbency, but I really want some real momma opinions. What worked best for your families, and are there any products/diaper types I shouldn’t waste my money on?

I hesitated to get newborn diapers since everyone said they’re only in them for a short time, so I settled on prefolds and covers (with a couple AIOs), since I figured I could use the prefolds to stuff pockets later. My little boy ended up being a skinny little thing, so at 5 months he’s only outgrown the AIOs, and is FINALLY fitting his one size pockets and AIOs. I got Thirsties size 1 and Blueberry Mini Coveralls and love them! (The Blueberrys are especially cute). My husband even prefers the prefolds to the pockets- he hates pulling them out 😝

I did prefolds because they are cheaper and since newborns grow so fast I don’t think it’s worth it to get more expensive diapers. Plus newborns stay really still and are easy to put a prefolds on. Then we got one size pockets that have fit her since she was a newborn and will till she potty trains.

we got about 6 of the lil joey cloth diapers that are for 4-15lbs. made specifically for newborns and have a snap down for the umbilical cord and prefolds to use as inserts too. the rest of my collection are a mix of pockets and just covers.

We did green mountain prefolds in newborn and thirsties size 1 covers with a snappi. We loved prefolds and my husband actually preferred them. I also got green mountain workhorses which are a fitted diaper and those were nice when out and about. We didn't use a single disposable for the first 3 months of his life.

We plan to use disposables until baby fits into the one size diapers. I think my sleep deprived brain will appreciate not having extra laundry and I don't want to spend extra money on diapers I'll only use during the newborn stage.

I only use pockets and I love them. I started cloth when my baby was around 6 months old, before then I used disposables until I was brave enough to take the dive ! When we eventually have baby #2, I’ll plan on trying out the newborn back with OS pockets, otherwise I’ll rent newborn diapers so I’m not left with the burden of reselling after a few months of use.

I received some pockets for free and I absolutely hate them. They always leak around the legs. Even if it's only been on an hour. I exclusively use prefolds and covers. I ever have issues with leaks or blow outs. We've been using cloth since about 2 weeks old.

We did an AIO rental and our LO leaked out of them almost from the beginning. Next time I plan on using pad folded prefolds and covers. I don’t want to spend a lot on something we only used for 7 weeks last time.
