Is it okay to take Cephalexin if I have a penicillin allergy?

My doctor prescribed me cephalexin on Friday for a UTI and today I've noticed my throat feeling kinda weird and I've been a little itchy in some spots of my body. I do have a penicillin allergy but I don't think I've taken penicillin in years. Do you think it's okay to just keep taking the pills?

Cephalexin is a cephalosporin based drug. It is not penicillin 🙄 the molecular structure is different. Having an allergy to penicillin may put you at a slightly higher risk (around 10%) of developing an allergy to other antibiotics however cephalosporin is safe to take with a penicillin allergy.

Since cephalexin is a cousin to penicillin. there is a small chance of cross sensitivity. I’d call your dr about your symptoms it’s likely a reaction.

Your doctor would not give you anything that you MIGHT be allergic to... I’m also allergic to penicillin and before giving me anything he makes sure it’s not risky to take. They wouldn’t put you in danger like that..

That is an ok with a penicillin allergy. However, you could be allergic to both  If your throat feels tight and you have a rash you need to call your doctor and tell them. They will call you in something else.

You need to go back and talk to your dr do not take it if you could be allergic to it 
I cannot have any cillin i am deadly allergic to them so i am never given anything in the same family penicillin amoxicillin etc im actually allergic to most if not all antibiotics so i cannot help
