Can I give my son rice cereal at 4 1/2 months?

The doc said I could start on solids but they mentioned oatmeal, and in the country I am right now all I find is rice cereal. Also, can I give him this mixed with water instead of breastmilk/formula? Thanks !

I’d say yes it’s fine however keep in mind that the rice cereal is just empty calories. Only thing he’d really get out of it is iron if your LO is breastfed which is good if that’s the case. However my LO is formula fed so cereal was pointless. We started solids at 4 months old though.

Every country has a different starting diet for babies based on local diets.   
In China the first food often given to babies over 4 months is congee (rice based).   In India they traditionally start babies on moong daal water but also use rice cereal m, fruits and veggies between 4-6 months particular if the baby seems to have issues digesting the protein in the daal. I started at 4 months with doctors okay. And i used formula the first time then water after that. He was fine.
