Worst pain in the history of forever **UPDATE**
Kidney stones! OMFG I felt like I was dying. Of course they couldn’t do a CT to confirm the presence or location of the stone due to my pregnancy, but the presentation was spot on for a kidney stone.
Ended up admitted to the hospital for the day so that we could get the pain under control. Pretty sure I passed it, but good lord I hope no one else has to suffer through this experience. Ever.
But we did have two ultrasounds done to check on the baby and all is well. HR 169 this morning and my husband got to watch our June Bug dance all over the monitor. When the tech would take one measurement and the try to go back for another the baby would not be where the tech last looked. Kind of funny watching her get frustrated with this jiggly June Bug. 😂
UPDATE: so we were discharged on Saturday at 5:30pm. Everything seemed fine throughout the day so we went with the advice of the docs that it was “just kidney colic”. 🙄
Anyway, we get home and eat some dinner and go to bed. Unfortunately the pain started up again at 1am on Sunday morning and I tried my best to deal with it. Grabbed the heating pad and tried to relax the pain away. Nothing. Took 1000mg of Tylenol. No dice. Finally at 3am I couldn’t take it anymore and we came back to the hospital, but I ended up getting sick from how severe the pain was. (First time vomiting this pregnancy.)
Once at the ED the same nurses were all here and they remembered me from the night before. Got the new IV placed, got fluids on board, and I vomited again. Got the IV Zofran, Benadryl and pain meds going. I offered another urine sample and they said they didn’t need it. 🤷♀️ About an hour later I needed more pain meds because holy hell the pain was so much more intense than the night before. Probably out of vengeance.
I get admitted to a different unit, one that specializes in pregnant women with complications. Thank goodness!! Later that morning several docs come in and talk with me about what the game plan is and we talk about changing up the pain meds a bit because it just doesn’t seem to be touching the pain. Another doc comes in and he asks how my urine looked for the sample they took in the ED. When I told him that they didn’t want one he was pretty irritated. I asked him why the urine wasn’t being strained and he was even more confused. Because if a patient comes in with this presentation you always strain just in case.
The only imaging study that can be done is an IVP X-ray series, which is 3-4 low dose radiation scans that will show what exactly is going on. Before the scan I went to the bathroom and didn’t think anything of it. I get back from the scan and the nurse strains the urine and SURPRISE there was a 3mm x 5mm gnarly looking stone! The results come back and there is “dilation consistent with a recently passed kidney stone”. And of course I’m feeling vindicated! I bet once the Monday doc called the Saturday doc and let them know the results they felt like asses. At least that’s what I envisioned happening.
So now I’m staying one more night just to be certain that there isn’t a repeat of Saturday into Sunday.
Ladies, listen to your instincts! If something doesn’t seem quite right, don’t let it go. I should have listened to mine and got quite the lesson. But now I’m stone free and will be discharged in the morning.
