What kind of dog?

My husband and I are buying a townhouse. We also have 3 cats and one is being rehomed for her health. I’ve wanted a dog for a long time and my husband is now talking about getting one. But we don’t know what to get. I really want a French bulldog. I love the “ugly” dogs. Plus their not too big for a townhouse with no lawn. But I checked and they aren’t the best breed with cats.

My husband used to have a dog but he had a Great Dane. He thinks “ugly” dogs really are ugly. I know, how dare he.

Here are my issues.

1. It needs to be a smallish breed, no chihuahuas.

2. Nothing yappy or high anxiety.

3. Good with cats. They are crazy with each other and I’m sure would be fine with a dog unless he was fearful.

4. We work away from home so he would need to not freak out.

5. Nothing slobbery.

6. We have a porch and a park, and amazing weather so taking him out isn’t a problem.

I know that dogs are dogs and you can’t predict all these things even amongst breeds. I also know at least until I change jobs, we won’t be home until at least 4pm m-f except for summers.

Help me choose a smallish, cat-friendly breed.
