Requesting Ultrasounds??

So, I'm gonna be 16 weeks at my next appointment. Which is when we supposed to be able to find out the gender of our baby. But, the doctor is making us wait till January, when I'm 20 weeks. I really really don't wanna have to wait that long especially since there's a huge possibility that they won't be able to get a good view at 20 weeks and I'll have to wait ANOTHER month. I did the research, they are able to see it at 16 weeks. 
I wanna request that they schedule me for an ultrasound but, I'm afraid if I do they'll charge me for it and won't bill it to my insurance. 
Side note: they also won't tell me when I'm supposed to have ultrasounds. I asked if they even had a estimate of which appointments I should have ultrasounds at, you know, nothing in stone and they told me I won't find out if I'm getting an ultrasound until before they do it. So, I have no advanced notice on whether or not my boyfriend should come to the appointment or not. He hasn't even gotten to see an ultrasound yet because we never know.

They will see everything better at 20 weeks vs 16 weeks. There’s a reason most anatomy scans are performed at this time. It isn’t just for you to find out the second. They need to measure development. You can try requesting an earlier one and it won’t be a matter if them not billing your insurance, rather your insurance not paying bc the doctor didn’t deem it necessary.

Even if they do bill it to your insurance your insurance doesn’t have to pay since being impatient does make it medically necessary.
If you really can’t wait you should just find a place that offers elective ultrasounds. It would be cheaper than paying for a medical one at your doctor’s office.

I personally think that you should just wait for the scan at 20 weeks. It's more important that they do a full assessment of baby for heart health, brain health, development etc. at 20 weeks. The gender reveal is not the priority and they're far more likely to be giving a more accurate guess at 20 weeks than 16 weeks. Imagine if at 16 weeks you thought it was a girl and bought lots of girl items, then at the more accurate 20 week scan the little baby parts developed further and it turned out to be a boy. It's just 4 more weeks. I'm in a similar position - waiting for my 20 week scan but just gotta be patient.

Wait for the 20 weeks or pay out of pocket.  Insurance shouldn’t have to cover what is considered a “nice to have”.

I’m in the same boat! And the same gestation as I won’t be getting an ultrasound until 20 weeks in January as well. I scheduled an ultrasound at a private place in a city near us though because I needed to know everything was alright. I was 14 weeks at that ultrasound and they told us gender and they seemed very certain. I’m not getting too excited until it’s confirmed by the doctor in January, but im really glad I could see him/her. So much weight and worry lifted off my shoulders. I think waiting until 20 weeks for the first scan is crazy. ☹️ and I was bummed because everyone I know had one way sooner at like 8-12 weeks. Good luck mama! And congratulations. ❤️

Honestly I would wait for your 20 week one. Everything is more developed then. They study everything then. Plus if it’s not what the doctor deems needed you will more than likely have to pay . I know mine is in January too but my insurance doesn’t pay for ultrasounds at all. It’s going to cost $480 for the one in January.

That's normal I didn't have an ultrasound threw my doctor till 19 weeks 4 days to see the sex. I had to pay out of pocket to have one done at 16 weeks to find out the sex sooner.

Sounds pretty standard. Your anatomy scan isn’t just for finding out the gender, that’s just a bonus. They are taking measurements of everything. From the heart, to the brain, everything. Baby is still small at 16 weeks for them to get measurements. I had to redo my 20 week scan at 28 weeks because baby was still to small to get a good look at the heart.

They can see the baby perfectly fine at 20 weeks. The 20 week scan is so they can see the organs, and certain blood vessels to determine proper growth. And the gender is way more defined at 20 weeks than 16. If you’re wanting to find out the gender early, go to a private ultrasound place. Insurance won’t view “wanting to know gender early” as a medically necessary reason to pay for an ultrasound.
