Holiday: visiting with extended family

Sarah

I'm wondering how everyone handles visiting with extended family during the holidays. Recently, my husband and I have made the decision together that we want to stay home with our son as a family of three on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Last year for his first Christmas we took him to my side of the family and there are typically about 50 people crammed into my grandma's house. It was extremely stressful for me, my husband, and my son. Everyone kept passing him around like he was a rag doll, he was crying, I was on the verge of tears because my son was so upset and my husband was upset seeing us. It was so loud and overwhelming for all three of us. We want to start traditions with our son and any future children of staying home in our PJs on Christmas Eve and making cookies for Santa, watching movies, looking at Christmas lights, etc. However, we recently broke the news to our family that we probably will not be coming over on Christmas Eve if it starts and lasts so late and we are getting nothing but grief. I'm wondering how everyone else handles the holidays while also creating your own traditions with your new/growing family. 😊Thanks in advance to everyone for your input!
