Birth story

Caroline • •• Belgium • 28y • 5yr relationship •• •• Arthur’s mom since 17.10.17 ••

Finally I have the time between changing diapers, pumping, cuddling and maintaining A household (How do moms do it, was my biggest question the first 2 weeks) to write my birth story.

On october 16th we had an appointement to see How we would proceed. My due date was Oct 17. My baby boy was estimated at 3kg 900, so I opted for an induction. We knew that he was ‘big’ with a big head. And I just about had it with being pregnant and the ‘side effects’ of it. Ive had severe carpal tunnel syndrome for 3 months, that the pain in my wrists would wake me. I couldn’t pee due to too much pressure. Being a big baby and all that. He got that from me 😅 So I could go to the hospital the same day at 9pm. So during the day I packed the rest of my stuff and prepared the house for the baby. Checked if everything was in place etcetera.

9pm they had me on the monitor to check if the baby was doing fine. And as I thought he was very active. During the Pregnancy he was very active and one time we even saw him doing Some sort of acrobatic stunt🤸🏼‍♂️ normally they have you on the monitor for 30 minutes. But since he was so active they kept me on the monitor till the baby was calmed down and a lower heartrate. At midnite they gave me 2 tablets to soften everything and 4 hours later they gave me 2 more. I went in that Monday with A 1.5cm dialation. The next morning (his due date 17/10/17 - cool date huh 😁) I was 4 cm dilated. At 10am the pain suddenly increased. It liked doubled. So I asked for the epidural. And I proceeded on with my day... at noon (they broke my water at 11) I was still 4cm... at 5pm I was 5cm... so slow 😩

At 7 Pm the obgyn checked again and I was at 7cm. She told me that she would try one last thing and if that didn’t speed things up I would have a emergency C-section. 30 min later I’ve had excruciating pain... that they rolled me in the OR to start procedures. But my SO Had to wait in the room till everything was sterilized and prepared... suddenly my SO was beside me, I didn’t even recognize him in that doctor outfit 🤭

Finally they could start. They gave me more epidural pain relief and they made the cut...

Because of my boy’s big head it took a while to get him out. It took so long that the epidural wore off. The anesthesiologist was

asleep or otherwise engaged I suppose ‘cause The last part of the operation, cleaning and closing of the wound was without pain relief.

I felt the whole thing... I screamed my lungs out and couldn’t lay still on the table... my obgyn became furious and screamed at the anesthesiologist to do her job and give me Some pain relief. Suddenly she jumped up and gave me so much that I became high 😡 when they finally stopped and everything was Done, it took them an hour to let me see my Son. They didn’t know if my SO and our boy would come to me or if the nurse would come get me... after an hour ( to long if you want to breastfeed) they came for me. (Mind you I went nuts in recovery due to the elderly lady Who had been asking the entire time I was there if somebody could help her pee... she had a tube / bag inserted 🤦🏼‍♀️)

Two days later my Dr came and told me I lost A lot of blood but the hemoglobine bag would have helped with that. I asked What bag... Turns out I never received that IV and that made breastfeeding so hard those 2 days... 🤷🏼‍♀️ Who knew, I didn’t. I’ve never had an operation before. And since I did’t sleep the nights before I thought the extreme exhaustion was caused by those circumstances rather then something medical... 6 weeks after the C-section and still experience muscle pain in my lower abdomen.

But with time and sleep deprevation (I strongly believe it’s because of the lack of sleep) you forget about the pain and when you hold your LO it’s all worth it. 😍

Arthur was Born on October 17th at 20u31 weighing 3,775 kg, measuring 51 cm and A headspan of 37 cm 😍
