PCOS/Endo - Long awaited Mr Man
First post on here but I've lurked for a little while. Figured I'd introduce us ☺. Hubs and I have been together for 9 years, with probably the majority of those years having not used any kind of BC. I was diagnosed with pretty severe endometriosis at 18, and PCOS a few years later when I stopped getting periods altogether. Anyways we figured we'd give it our best shot, and if it didn't happen then at least we tried.
My OBGYN is pretty amazing and I've had him for years. He diagnosed me and did my laparoscopy for my endo way back, and after fiddling with a few meds over course of a year or so we found out we were pregnant on Family Day weekend. Everything went smoothly through the pregnancy. I'm an RN working in a surgical unit (formerly Peds/NICU) so my OBGYN made a few good natured cracks about me working so late in my pregnancy when he'd see me around the hospital and at appointments. I had a scheduled induction Nov 1st. I went in at 9am and he broke my water. I walked until 11am with maybe a contraction or two, not good enough so we started the drip.
By 4pm I was about 4cm the contractions were getting a lot stronger and on top of one another so I asked who the anesthetist on call was, he was a good one so I said, "Bring me the man with all the drugs!" Unfortunately he got called into an emergency surgery, so I got an anesthetist who was doing an OBGYN residency, I had no idea who he was but I was uncomfortable enough to let him go ahead. 3 attempts later (shudder) at around 5:30pm I had my slightly uneven epidural lol.
Everything went pretty quickly from there since I was more relaxed. It was about 7pm when I felt a bit of a burning sensation like I should start pushing. The nurses came in, set up and gave me the ok to start pushing. I pushed for a while and then began to notice their voices were a bit more hushed. Then I heard "decels" and knew his heart rate must be dropping. By then he had moved too far down for the fetal monitor so they were using a hand held doppler and there was no monitor for me to see how he was doing. My husband told me he heard them say his heart rate was dropping in the 50s with each push which to a NICU nurse sounds like starting oxygen and compressions. There was a very oblivious med student in the room who was sternly told to "Find Dave... now!" lol
Once my OBGYN came in I pushed twice more, and he very calmly told me to stop. He called for NICU and explained that the cord was around my little dude's neck and he had a pretty bad shoulder dystocia (shoulder caught up on the pubic bone). Nasty episiotomy (gotta do what you gotta do), he had me push until the head was mostly out, very quickly got the cord unwrapped and managed to turn him and pop him out without any broken bones. I know a lot of the OBGYNs pretty well having worked with them and I honestly think if we'd had anyone else it would not have turned out like it did. Very grateful! Little dude coughed after a second and started to cry which was pretty reassuring. And the NICU nurse who showed up to the delivery was an awesome former colleague who's husband works with my Hubs, super glad it was her as she knows her s**t lol
Little Guy was born 7:24pm, 7lbs 4oz, 21.5cms. We had been having a hard time deciding on names but we both independantly decided on Duncan (after my maternal grandfather).
Bit of a novel I know! Anyways, thanks for reading if you made it this far. Feeling slightly insane that after all that, just yesterday I was already thinking about being pregnant again 😂
