What is your view on the Army/Military?

Question

Not specifically the US Military, but armies in general.
I’m not sure where I stand. I know my brother is very bothered by the fact that every country has an army of people ready to kill for them. Thinking about it that way makes me somewhat nervous.
Do you think they’re a necessity?
If no countries had a military, do you think the idea would bother you?

I'm 100% supportive of the military. Yes, they are necessary and I'm extremely grateful for each and every one of our soldiers. Even if they were never deployed, the fact that they are ready and willing to defend their country and it's citizens, people they don't even know, is enough to deserve my respect.

(Military police)... I literally write tickets. We do way more than just kill everyone.

Well I was in the army and my SO is active duty so I’m pretty pro-military. It’s weird that you are kinda assuming we are all killers or something? My SO is a civil engineer and I was in logistics. Normal jobs within the military... there is a small percentage of infantryman and even a smaller percentage of people that actual see battle...

There would never be a situation where an army wouldn't exist. To think so is ignorant. I am grateful for the military.

Unfortunately yes, I think at least a reasonable size (not sure what that means) standing military force is—sadly—necessary. Not just for defense at home, but to be able to provide help abroad. Not saying militaries are always used in a good way—the US, for example, doesn’t have a great history when it decides to meddle in foreign civil wars—but I can certainly think of cases, such as mass genocides, where an intervening military force would be a good thing if used properly.
The military does much more than “kill for the country” though, at least in the U.S., but I imagine elsewhere also. They help provide resources, rescue, and security during and after natural disasters. In the U.S. in particular, they’ve been the force behind national communication lines. Technologies developed for and by the military have filtered down for civilian use. The military is also great for the economy, and is the largest employer in the U.S. when you count military members, government employees, and contractors.

I think, yes, an army must be necessary, at least at this point in time. 
But I do not support the current US military industrial complex, along with the propaganda being fed to minors in high school to join the army, and when they come back physical and/or mentally ill the government that treats them poorly when they are no longer in the military. This current war is not for my safety and I don't want people to die for something our government stuck their noses in.

Thinking about your question, I though well why does a country have an army? Well most people would say they are the forefront force to ensure the safety and freedom of their country. With many other countries being unpredictable this is somewhat of a necessity if something happens, I would much rather have an organised and trained set of selfless people ready to ensure our freedom. The only way armies wouldn’t be needed is if the world was unified, however this would never happen we all have different values, beliefs and ways of living.

I’m an army wife, so I’m not sure I can give an unbiased opinion. But, I would rather have someone trained to follow orders and fight for our freedom and way of life than just let anyone run around Willy nilly with a weapon during a wartime situation. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I find them to be problematic, but necessary at the same time. I find them to be problematic due to living and growing up in the US with a father in the army. I don’t like military culture in the US. Other than that, I see the military as generally service people for the nation in many ways. I imagine they do more than just fight in combat during wars. And if someone is attacking the country, then I see a need for defense.
