Big city moms: car or subway?

I live in a big city and it’s totally impractical to have a car here. Right now I get around just fine on the subway but wonder if that’s going to be a challenge with a new baby. Does anyone have experience with this, or suggestions?

I do not live in a big city, but have visited NYC with my kids. Invest in a good pack style carrier, and find a high quality collapsible stroller. There are stores in most cities that specialize in baby wearing, and will be able to help you find the right carrier for your situation. The carrier is great, because it almost feels like it is just you (other than the diaper bag). Once they get too big to carry, get a good stroller, that you can collapse with one hand, so you can carry or wrangle the child with the other. I had two kids my last trip, and hubby and I used a pair of small umbrella strollers. We did not take the subway on that trip, though.
