Single parents with custody of their child can’t enlist. You would have to sign over custody of your child to another person in order to enlist. And you can’t grant someone “temporary custody” the custody transfer has to be permanent.

I don’t have personal experience with joining with a child, but I know you have to give custody to someone else while going through training and boot camp. You can get custody back after and will just have to keep a family care plan.

I am currently Army and am going to tell you now, it is not allowed for you to go ACTIVE military but you are absolutely allowed to join reserves or national guard. If you were already in when you got pregnant that would be a different story. It actually used to be an automatic discharge some time ago for women who got pregnant while in but that has changed. If you get married you can go active or if you permanently give up custody; if you or a recruiter try to play the system and regain custody after you join you will face consequences.

You have to sign over custody just through basic training. And then they sign back custody to you when you get out. It’s just that initial part, but after that being a single parent isn’t a problem unless you’re in the Navy and on a ship lol Obviously deployments in other branches are hard, but ships are dumb and randomly go out to sea for like a day, or 3 weeks, etc and then preparing for deployments you’re gone too. So don’t do the Navy in my opinion. (I just got out of the Navy)

Just to add for those saying you can, trust me on this, here are the regulations for each branch. These are indisputable rules put in place by the military that every member has to follow. It all comes down to the military not wanting to be liable. The number of times they have had an issue with a single parent deploying as well as trainings and not having anyone to watch their child has been way to much. There is a reason for these regs.

• Navy – COMNAVCRUITCOMINST (Navy Recruiting Manual – Enlisted) 1130.8F;
• Air Force – AFRS (Air Force Recruiting Service) Instruction 36-2001;
• Marine Corps – Marine Corps Order P 1100.72C, Chapter 3, Section 2; and
• Coast Guard – COMDTINST (Commandant Instruction) M1100.2E.
