Does anyone take acyclovir??

My doctor prescribed me this yesterday, I’m exactly 37 weeks pregnant. She gave me a 30 day supply and I’m suppose to take it 2 times a day. I’m worried about not being able to breast feed while on the medication. I also get no more refills (i only have a cold sore) and don’t even get them but once a year. I’m worried that Once i stop taking the medication that i will have another pop up due to no longer taking the medication. Does anybody have any experience with acyclovir in general, we’re you able to breast feed? Did the medication help you?

First things first - I HATE those suckers! 😂 I used to get cold sore very regular (about every couple of weeks) and always used Acyclovir to treat it - it does work wonders, but as far as I was told you shouldn't take while pregnant and only very cautiosly while breastfeeding. Regardless, what has helped me tremendously is taking a daily pill of L-Lysine (an amino acid) as a preventative. I went from regular outbreaks to maybe only 3 a year. You can take up to 6000mg a day during an outbreak, it speeds up the healing progress to a few days. Maybe something to look into instead of taking Acyclovir?

I am a post partum nurse and the OBGYN's usually have their patient's stop the acyclovir after the baby is born, in my experience. So maybe clarify that. If they have you stop, then it shouldn't affect breastfeeding.

I’ve taken acyclovir for cold sores, but never while breastfeeding. It helped my cold sores clear up so much more quickly!
