Military bun for uncooperative hair

I’ve had big natural curly hair for forever. Just now I’ve been trying to practice a military bun. Its very frizzy no matter how much I smooth it down and add gel it doesn’t work and the whole sock bun thing isn’t working either. I’ve been thinking of cutting it but it will most likely stick straight out of my head and be even more unmanageable. I’ve considered perm straightening it but I’m not sure how that will look or work. Help ? (Pictures as reference)
