I’m confused about something: which is right?

I keep hearing two contradictory things: 1.Ds and romantic relationships are incompatible, and 2. that they can often be the same thing. Both sides are very adamant that they are right. Who is correct? Why?

D/S relationships are unique to each couple, and can be whatever they want it to be. My marriage is filled with romance, lust, submission, sadism, and a host of other things. There isn't one box that it must fit into to be "legit." If it works for you, great. If it doesn't, chuck it and find what does. Who cares what an outsider thinks.

my husband is a dom and it doesn't effect our marriage at all because we have a great respect for each other and we know each others boundaries. The best way I can explain it is there is a switch so to speak in our relationship . We have our every day family life and then we have our relationship in the bedroom . Its not difficult at all. Does it work for everyone no but can it work in a relationship. Defintley yes. I just can't stress this enough communication and boundaries between the two is key.

we have a dominant and submissive dynamic and we are very romantically compatible. 
it is possible to play out a dominant and submissive relationship with someone while not being romantically involved with them.

on the other hand it is possible for couples who are romantically compatible to play out their own dominant and submissive dynamic

ignorant people may look at BDSM relationships from the outside and see it as abuse or not be able to comprehend the behavior as loving or intimate. but it all depends on the individual. of course some people find intimacy in D/S while others would not.

The second the dom I see and I are done with a scene we are both equals again. We’re joking, sarcastic, and taking good natured digs at one another. I could see how it could work in a romantic type of relationship, I think it would just be normal once you were out of the scene. Granted there are couples that that’s what the entire relationship is about.

Absolutely 2. It depends on the situation between D/S but I am in a long term relationship w my Dom and he is SO caring and sweet outside the bedroom.
