Should a dad get 6 days off being a parent because he's sick?

This is something that happened a few months ago. But I was thinking about it today and want opinions... 
Back in Oct. my husband got a flu type illness. It wasn't so severe, just upset tummy(no vomiting), diarrhea and chills. I was stuck taking care of the baby for 6 days by myself while he laid in bed all day. Couldn't even change a diaper. After day #4 I was admittedly pretty pissed at him and I started to wonder if I had ever gotten sick like that, if it would be okay for me to just take a week off of being a mother. I know for a fact I would have still had to take care of the baby while sick, because that's what parents do, we don't get "sick days." so I didn't think it was fair. What are your thoughts?

Well you had every right to be upset. But I should hope if you’re ever sick like that and feel crappy enough to remain in bed for days then your husband would take care of the baby. Yes he’s a parent and so it’s his job to care for his child, but he’s also human and needs to care for himself.

I’d be happy he wasn’t touching the baby. I would have quarantined my husband off anyway and made him take the “time off.” My husband would give me the time though because I’m recovering from gallbladder surgery right now and I’m not going to be able to lift my baby for a month since she’s over 10 lbs.   My husband is the primary caretaker right now. And I don’t see it as having time off. It’s actually torture not being able to care for my baby like I had been able to before.

Maybe he did it because he didn’t want them to get sick. But I know damn well I would be sick and take care of baby too. Welcome to mother hood

I understand why you’re upset because you should be given the same courtesy of “time off” if you were sick. But at the same time I’d be happy he wasn’t touching the baby too much while sick since you don’t want baby to get it.

Men are extra baby-like when ill. I agree that it isn’t fair, but I wouldn’t want my sick husband caring for the baby while contagious. Just let him know that he’s expected to be a father no matter what the circumstances are.
