When to use nipple cream?

I plan to nurse my baby plus pump when possible. I'm hoping to alleviate some of my unnecessary discomfort/pain by using nipple cream. However, I'm not sure about the "when" of it. Any advice?

I read on the lansinoh  (sp?) that you can apply before or after nursing so it's safe to do either. I  would wait obviously until you have the baby first, but then you can do either. I only pump, but only use as needed. See how things go for you. Just refer to the packaging instructions.

I only used it when I needed it. If I noticed it was painful I would use it but I didn’t have that many painful issues surprisingly. I plan on doing things the same way when my girl gets here unless she’s more difficult or easier to breast feed.

Breastfeeding shouldn’t hurt if it hurts it means the baby isn’t latching on correctly
