I think if they cross the boundary into a “for profit” that it could be fair game. Churches need money to operate and it is difficult if they can only barely cover their bills and salaries month-to-month, but if their accounts are overflowing and the pastor is living significantly larger than the average congregational member, then they’re likely not using that money Biblically.

I feel like they can remain tax exempt, but they need to fill out the paper work for accounting for all the money they have made and where the money was used. Other non-profits must account for this to the IRS, so why are churches not held to the same standards?

It’s hard to believe I have to pay taxes and Joel Osteen doesn’t ( as a church/entity). I think they do get to influence people and unofficially they are represented without paying taxes. They walk on a blurry fine line.

I say yes, only because I’m a firm believer in separation of church and state. If you tax them you have to give them representation and I’m 100% not for that.

I think for the greater part no... they make a fortune and the pastor's are extremely well off (one of the richest men in my country is a pastor).
But for a small church that actually looks and acts like a church, then yes let them be tax exempt.

Considering how my church is ran and organized entirely by volunteers; and any donations that the church receives goes towards helping members of the church who are struggling financially, who may need help with food, clothing or shelter, or help paying their utilities due to personal hardships, and also members of the community, (who aren't even members of the church,) as well as the missionary fund, and building temples and other churches, and other services that the church offers, as well as various service projects, I believe they should absolutely be exempt from taxes. Other people who make donations can use their donations as a deduction on their taxes however.

No, its a religious group not a charity. I think they should have to register as a business and as a charity in separate forms. Any donations go through the charity side and has to be accountable as to what happens to it. The business side should cover salaries and as it SHOULD be so little they won't be liable for tac anyway.
