I’m super late to respond but I’m going to anyway. 
We had been talking about getting engaged for about a year before he proposed. I would get anxious at every special outing we went to, and I would always get my hopes up. I had specific moments in my head of when he could and probably would do it, but he was two steps ahead of me, knowing I would expect it at those times. 
His dad was killed in a car accident back in 2015, and on his birthday this past September, his entire family went to a restaurant in NYC to celebrate what would have been his 60th birthday. My family was also invited to and attended this dinner (my hint #1, but I was oblivious). My future sister
 and mother in law made speeches about how much they miss him and would tell stories that didn’t leave a dry eye in the entire room. Of course, everyone was waiting for my (now)fiancé’s speech. 
He seemed super nervous talking, but I didn’t think too much of it because he gets really nervous when he speaks in front of crowds, even if it is family. He talks about how hard it is without Dad around and told jokes about some of his antics. He said it sucks that Dad isn’t around for special moments, like his sister’s 30th birthday coming up. “And another really big special moment I wanted him to be here for is...” and drops to his knee, in front of our families, and asks me to marry him. I was so shocked, I didn’t even say yes, but he knew the answer anyway, put the ring on my finger, and I ugly-cried for about 20 minutes while everyone was congratulating us lol

well it became less of a surprise because I was so bothered with thinking about it that he ended up telling me I had to wait one more day. 😂 I had gotten iit into my head because it was our second anniversary and I really didn’t wanna wait any longer because I feel like two years is the perfect time and I knew he had been planning a little outing on our anniversary for longer than he usually plans anything. 
it was sweet and simple and we had already picked out the ring a while back and i’m a little bummed that i ruined my surprise but it didn’t make me any less happy. in fact knowing it was coming rly put me in a better mood. 😂

I sure was! I got told i was getting a pistol for Christmas! 😂😂 but turns out it was actually a ring!
