best birth control options?

I've never been on birth control (besides condoms) i am now in a committed relationship and we have been using the withdrawal method. i would like to get on birth control and have scheduled an appointment with my doctor. I'm curious what everyone here uses and what their preferences are and why?

I used the blended hormone pill for about 9 years. Honestly I think pills aren't a bad place to start, as they're generally pretty easy to get and really can work wonders for your cycle and hormones. For the first 5-6 years my periods were light, relatively painless, and lasted a max of 5 days. After a while though, I noticed that while they still prevented pregnancy reliably, all those added benefits just weren't there any more. My periods were lasting upwards of 10 days with spotting. So I got Nexplanon (the implant) put in a week ago. It has been so nice to not have to remember a pill every day and my last period (it should be put in while you're on your period) was already shorter.
My sister is too young for the implant, and pills didn't work at all for her. She swears by the shots, and hasn't had a period at all since she started them.
