Did I use the wrong test?

So I broke down and POAS today. I'm 12dpo and 2 days from AF. I guess I used a regular test not an early response. It came up a BFN. I read after I took the test you are supposed to use it on the day of your missed period. Should I take another and use an early detection one? Is there really a difference? Is one more sensitive than the other? Am I just setting myself up for a BFN again?
