Keep Family Tradition?

In my family, we kind of have a tradition. For generations, the first born daughter’s middle name is Marie. My middle name is Marie. I don’t hate the name but I have fallen in love with so many others! Would i be terrible person if i broke the family tradition and chose a different middle name for my daughter?

Would giving 2 middle names be an option? It does make the official name long, but at least you’d still be keeping tradition and also be able to pick out another name you like

My SO has a tradition that the first born son’s middle name is Everitt. Personally, I think the name is hideous.. but we did it, my son is Finnley Everitt.. not a fan of the name, but I did it out of respect for his family traditions.

Personally I'd stick with the tradition bc I like meaningful family middle names. It's your child though and you make the decisions. I don't think you should feel pressured to keep it.

Tradition is important and it’s just a middle name, just pick a great first name! I’m in the same boat as you take too! My family has the girl with the middle name Marie and my mother said she would be extremely upset if I didn’t follow

I'm having this exact problem, also with the middle name Marie. I feel like everyone I meet has the same middle name as me, and I want my kids to feel like their name is more individual to them. I told my mom before we got pregnant that I didn't want to continue it, and she was pretty upset. I feel like I'd regret sticking with a common name I've never liked out of tradition rather than name my kids something I love.

Keep it in your list when you practice names but don’t feel pressured to continue it. If you don’t love the name, you don’t have to use it.
