Do you and your husband/ boyfriend have different parenting styles? And if so how do you deal with discipline? Something my husband and I have been struggling with.

Not really. We discussed parenting a lot before ttc, so we are like %99 on the same page.

It’s fine to have differing parenting styles as long as the compliment each other, it’s where they are polar opposites you have problems as it just causes a lack of consistency and confusion of the child/ren.
OH and his ex wife had very similar parenting styles when they were together and their children were well rounded, happy, polite, respectful and a delight to be around so they had obviously done something right. I got on board with OH as he had obviously already done a good job that far and knew what he was doing and what was best for his kids. We just assumed the consistency would continue, which it did until his exes boyfriend moved in  and instead of her getting him on board she changed her parenting style to suit him. Within weeks the kids behaviour got really bad and their attitudes changed.

Hmmm. I’m my daughters biological mum and my husband has adopted her when we married (he had no children) discipline depends on the age. We have a 5 year old and it was hard cos my husband came into an already established parenting style. Nonetheless we have a pattern. Explain, chance 1, explain again chance 2. Third time either she’s in time out for 5 mins and then at the end she gets another explanation and the reason we put her in time out, an apology from her and a hug from us. Works amazingly on her to the point where she now stops something when told once. We do also give her the opportunity to explain certain behaviours etc. These monsters feel the need to be heard.
