Can I tell my doctor no?

I had a c-section with my first daughter because she was breeched. The nurse told me the other day that depending on the circumstances that usually the doctor will not allow a natural birth if you previously had a c-section. Can I tell him no that I want to let it happen naturally if possible?

Yes and no. You absolutely can choose for yourself, but you also have to recognize that, especially with pregnancy, doctors have every right to discontinue providing care if you refuse to comply with their medical advice. It’s probably best to find another doctor, instead of trying to fight it. Most doctors deal with this a lot, especially ones who don’t do vbac.

Well you can ask but I would prefer to find a doctor who is supportive rather than have a conflict which might affect my care. If you have an OB that supports VBACs and they say we’ll need to do another CS, wouldn’t you be more comfortable knowing that this is what’s really required and not just them not wanting to do a VBAC?

Depending on how your csection was done, a lot of people now go on to have vbacs. I’ve known at least 3 people who have gone on to have healthy vagi all births after having a csection. There are exceptions where it’s just not possible, but I’d advocate for myself and request a vbac if it will be safe for you and the baby.

it realy depends on your situation. my doctor told me after my c-section that i should wait at least a year before getting pregnant again that we could try vbac if I wanted. and this was during my post partum check up. There are a lot of doctors encouraging vbac.

I mean you can but then your doctor also might refuse to be your doctor which he/she can absolutely do... with my doctor she was like ”good luck finding another good doctor to do a VBAC when your babies are this close together.” A lot of doctors who used to do VBACS more frequently are actually backing out of them because there were more malpractice suits and complications than they had actually anticipated. You. An find doctors who will still do them but are they as up to date as they should be? Are they as good of a doctor? (This being the case if your kids are within 3 years of each other). And gahhh I’m setting myself up for being attacked by people who did it and are totally fine. I believe there were successes for sure! Obviously the rate of complications is not super high so yes there are a ton of successes but did these people do that just recently because I’m saying that recently doctors are stepping away from vbacs....

i mean, since they said depending on the circumstances, im assuming they'll probably let you have a vbac, buuut if it's unsafe to have one, they want to do a c-section.. if they dont think it's safe, then i dont think you should refuse, no matter how bad you want it..

You can definitely tell the doctor what you want, but in the end he or she will do whatever they feel is in the best interest of you and your baby.

It depends on how long between births and how your surgery went and how you healed. 2 or more years between births is optimal for vbac under ideal circumstances.
