Epidural and catheter??

Not entirely sure which group to post this in but I know a lot of Jan 18 mammies have already had their babies and /or have other children.
I worked as a health care assistant previously and witnessed something traumatic involving a patient and a catheter in her urethra. (She was in a lot of pain) and I just have this weird fear of them now and would never ever want one.
I'm just wondering do women who receive and epidural need a catheter inserted?? And if so is it painful when it is put in \ taken out ?

Mine didn't hurt at all, but the first pee after was worse than anything lol

Yes if you get an epidural you have to have one. And no they wait until you are already numb to insert it, and take it out right after the placenta comes out

Yes if your having an epidural they will insert the catheter, and believe me no one is a bigger chicken than me when it come to these things, but I didn't even notice the catheter going in as my body was numb, and even when the nurse took it out, I didn't really notice much, other than thinking I kinda needed to pee. And tbh the epidural isn't too bad either. Good luck. 
(Now you have me thinking about my previous birth, and it's making me feel nervous as I'm due to have a baby in the next couple of weeks 😓

I had an epidural with my first and had to get catheter. I’m pretty sure they have to give you one because you can’t feel anything and you can’t get up to pee. It didn’t hurt going in or coming out for me but everybody is different.

I’ve had 2 catheters and I haven’t even given birth yet, both times wasn’t bad at all just uncomfortable.

You have to get one. I understand it’s because the epidural prevents you from peeing because it paralyzes all functions that allow you to go. Doesn’t hurt, and if it did you can just tell them because it shouldn’t.

I had to have mine in without being numb. But I had to have an emergency csection. It was uncomfortable buy didn't hurt.  hardly felt it come out.

I did have to have one with my first which freaked me out but you have an epidural so you don’t feel anything but slight pressure. When you pee after you have the baby it does tend to burn. It felt like I had a bad UTI but it was manageable! Still creeps me out though

I had one and i didn’t even feel it go in? I did though feel them take it out because by then my epidural was fading and I was so sore and swollen. Nothing too bad though! Don’t be scared of it :)

You shouldn't feel pain when it's inserted or taken out because of the epidural itself. But I def agree with the other ladies that the first pee after can be pretty intense.
