Excercise, 18 weeks

So my doctor told me not to lift more than 20 pounds. Well my husband and I recently joined the gym again and so far I've walked on the treadmill 1+ miles, and sometimes go on the bike. I just wonder if there's anything else I can do to give birth easier. I plan to have a natural birth, no meds, but I am quite scared of tearing, etc. Are there any other excercises I can do that could help me give birth naturally and safe for me and baby?

Squats, lunges, anything that strengthens your thighs, glutes...also some light arm weights to make it easier to carry that baby around!

Start slow. And stay slow. Don’t up your workouts quickly, you have terrible balance thanks to pregnancy, and your body is allocating resources elsewhere. If you aren’t a big weight lifter, they recommend you don’t start while pregnant. Exercise is good, but don’t strain. You’re going to want to listen to your body, it will tell you what it doesn’t like. I also hate to say it, but there’s not much you can do about tearing. You may, you may not. Some women recommend a penerial (?) massage. But take it from someone who’s had a third degree tear (all the way to the wall of the anus) it’s alright. You’ll feel stitches a little during healing, but you’ll be alright even if you do tear. :) and I didn’t tear at all with my second. 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s a crap shoot!

I can’t lift anything over 15lbs (high risk) but doctor told me light weights and rubber band workouts are good! Also depending on why you’re high risk you may not be able to do squats until closer till the end of pregnancy :-/

Thank you so much for the advice! No, I am not used to lifting. We just joined the gym again, and it had been months since last went. We'd still walk and stuff, but actual working out is just starting up again. I don't want to do too much to where I could hurt my baby, but I definitely needed some advice as to what I can do. Again, thank you all so much! It's greatly appreciated!

I wouldn’t think some gentle weight lifting with machines would be bad but perhaps you could consult a personal trainer? I hired one during my last pregnancy to help me lift safely and keep adapting to my growing bump. My birth was completely unmedicated and I credit my fitness in part for it being so quick and smooth. Childbirth is a very physical process!

I don't believe so. They just told me that on my first appointment. Is that only for high risk??
