How to teach 4 year old to read?

Hey ladies, so my son will be starting kindergarten this fall 😬 and he doesn’t know how to read or write yet, he does know the alphabet and he can count so he knows letters and numbers and colours but he doesn’t really show any interest in reading. He also loves to colour but he doesn’t want to learn to write when I try to teach him.  Anyone have any advice?? Tia!

Read to your child, then read some more and then read even more...lol. Seriously, reading to your child is a very effective way to teach them to read. Point to the words as you’re reading them in a book. Make everyday life, errands etc teaching moments by pointing out words you see when your driving, at the store, on signs etc. it’s all about repetition and exposure to words.

Why does a child of 4 years old needs to be able to read already? I really thought this was sarcastic until I read the replies 😱 
Maybe it’s a cultural difference, because over here we start teaching children to read and write when they are 6 years old. They learn colours and shapes before that, but mostly they just play in school and develop their social skills. 
I’m probably old school but it just saddens me that children need to know that much this early. I turned out fine with my 3 degrees, speaking multiple languages, a managing job and a good income. And the funny thing is that now I’m a sahm. Still rocking it but in a different department 😋😁 Go feminism 👍🏻 
Not to insult anyone off course, I just wanted to mention that kids will be okay learning at their own pace. Are they interested? Sure teach! Are they not, their life will not be over. They will be striving in another subject at school and then they will catch up the rest eventually. But maybe that’s just my (Dutch) mentally 🤷🏼‍♀️

my son is six and in kindergarten and they have been only teaching sounds and how to recognize letters. they don't start teaching reading until first grade here.

I actually recently read an article saying it’s best to just read to them and get them having fun and loving books. Leave the teaching to the school as their techniques will likely be different and it just confuses the kids.

My little girl loves reading now but it was hard at first she six now and is reading at a much higher level than children in her class. 
When we were teaching her me and my partner made sure we knew all about phonics and things and this made it more interesting and we would just ask things throughout the day to get her used to how words sound compared to how they are spelt and she picked it up eventually.

My niece just turned three and she knows how to follow along with words and write some letters and her own name. She can count to almost ten too! ABC mouse has done wonders and we just talk to her on her level alllll the time. She feels like a little adult and has motivation to be just like the adults lol
