Disposable or cloth diapers?

Question

Trying to decide whether to try the local diaper service, which can deliver fresh prefold inserts (and cart away the dirty!) weekly. My husband worries about being difficult. Especially appreciate votes from second + time moms.

I nannied for a mom who used cloth diapers and it's my first time to use them. It was honestly the easiest thing! I was expecting it to be this huge hassle but it wasn't at all. You rinse the poop, if there is any, down the toilet or down the drain in the tub. Then you ring it and put it in the diaper pail. That thing never stank! After changing the baby I would set up the bouncy chair in the bathroom and do the diaper rinse after I had the baby satisfied in the chair. It's does create more laundry and they are more expensive at first but they can last the baby the entire time it's in diapers! The amount of money you would save by using them and washing them your self is crazy!

I cloth diapered my son and will do so for this baby. I didn’t have the option of a service when he was first born so I bought my own stash along with a diaper sprayer attachment, a few wet bags and a collapsible drying rack. It really could not have been easier. I also went with the all-in-one diapers which were more pricey but I also didn’t have to assemble the liners and inserts.

I used disposables for my first 3 then switched to cloth with babies 4 and 5 and will be cloth diapering the one I’m pregnant with now. I’m so happy I switched to cloth. I wash all my own diapers. It was a great decision for our family. Baby #5 was highly allergic to disposables and I blame all the chemicals they use in them for that. She was clothed full time once we realized she was allergic. It also is great financially especially if you plan on having more children later. I will be using my same cloth that I used for babies 4 and 5 on #6. I might buy a few more new ones just for fun cause they have so many cute prints. But it will save me about $2800 not buying disposables. Also when you are done using them you can sell them back on b/s/t sites or turn them into local cloth diapering shops for credit/$. So you end up getting back some of the money you spent on them in the first place.

We couldn't use cloth as all the daycares by us require disposable.

It really just depends on your situation and comfort level. I recommend not using mainstream disposables because of the chemicals, but otherwise I think you'll do great with anything you choose! I'm not comfortable using a diaper service so I do cloth myself. We use cloth the vast majority of the time, but do use disposables occasionally when I need to "strip" the cloth (heavy duty soak and wash to get rid of build up), and my toddlers use disposables at night because they leak through cloth. We use disposable trainers also, when they are needed. For cloth, my husband and I both prefer prefolds with Rumparooz covers because they are the most bulletproof diapers we have found (cloth or disposable!). For disposables, we prefer Bambo Nature brand, but Honest Co. is great too. :)
