My doctor explained that the pill itself doesn't cause weight gain- the hormones however do. They cause cravings, phantom hunger pangs, and thirst that can often be confused for hunger, and those combined often cause women to eat more, which results in weight gain. When I started bc, m doctor told me to up my water intake, and to stick to an eating schedule for the first three weeks (which is how long it's expected for your body to regulate to the hormones) and it would reduce the likelihood of weight gain. Good luck! I didn't gain any at all!
