First IUI - what is the procedure and timeline?

We decided to try IUI after TTC for 1 year. My period is supposed to start on Sun or Mon. Our first consultation appointment with physican at fertility center is on Wed. So, my period will have started by then. Does it mean we missed this month and can start IUI next month? What are the steps and timeline for IUI?

Here's how mine has gone.  First ultrasound was on CD 4 because of Christmas,  so I was still spotting from AF as expected.  I was instructed to buy Ovidrel (trigger shot) and Follistim.  My doctor showed me how to load the dosage of Follistim and how to inject myself.  Easy peasy, honestly. I did that for a week and came back next week for my second ultrasound to see my egg size and how many.  I had one egg on the left ovary maturing nicely.  Came back again a couple of days later to measure the eggs progress and it was a proper 18.5mm, and because my OPK showed it was a peak day and the "white secretions" around my thick lining in the ultrasound,  we decided to do the IUI that night without the trigger.  Husband came home and we spent a couple of hours "edging" and got a good sample 30 minutes before my evening appointment. I was instructed to hold the sample in my bra and wear a warm coat on the drive over.  One last ultrasound to check the egg size and then the sample was prepared.  Then a speculum was inserted and the needle was a floppy nylon thing so there was no pain at all, plus I was very relaxed and happy to finally be doing something. Doc said it went in easy. I laid there for 20 minutes after with my hips propped up with a blanket, and doc advised no sex tonight but please do the deed tomorrow morning and evening.  The next day I had my final ultrasound and my doc asked "please tell me you were in pain later that night". In fact,  I was!  I felt bloated like crazy hours after the IUI and apparently that was because of ovulation. I'm now 10 days past IUI.  Ultimately this was a lot easier than I expected it to be,  likely because I didn't have to trigger.  I hope my experience helps you to prepare, and I wish you so much luck!!!

Every clinic does it differently but usually you start with a baseline ultrasound between CD1-5 then depending on your situation start taking Femara or clomid for 3-5 days then you will get another ultrasound to check your follicle growth. Usually at that time if everything looks good your doctor will schedule the insemenation day. Sometimes your doctor may prescribe a shot called ovidril that will force you to ovulate within 25-48 hours. Your doctor will ask you to administer the medication a day before your insemination. On insemination day your partner will have to give his sperm sample, they will wash the sperm and pick out the best ones. Once the sperm is ready you can come in and the doctor will inject the sperm as close to your cervix as possible. Then you’ll have lay there about 10-15 minutes and then your done.

Update: my period started yesterday. We saw the doctor today. Before starting anything he first wanted to make some tests. After test results we will decide if IUI is good for us. I didnt like the doctor. He looks very professional. He is very confident and surely he is experienced. He referred to papers that he wrote, etc. But I just didnt like him. I hate that we can't conceive by ourselves. I hate the feeling that nothing is under my control anymore. If the doctor is good, there is a chance that we will have a baby. Otherwise, I dont know. He gave me the impression that he prefers IVF to IUI. I just don't like it. I hope one day I write here how wrong I was today and that he is a great doctor. I just hope that this month we can conceive by ourselves. 🙏🙏🙏

can IUI work if your problem is blocked fallopian tubes?

Thanks for the responses. I thought they are making some tests before starting the process. So first Appointment should happen before the period. We will see on Wed I guess.
