Question from a sick FTM

Heather

I know that awful flu is going around and I don’t think it’s that but I do have something. Seems like a sinus/cold thing. But it’s hit fast and hard.

My baby girl is 1 month old and breastfed. My questions are

1) can she get sick from my milk?

2) do I need to have someone watch her out of the house to keep her from getting sick?

3) my left breast is a little sore but not feeling hot, how do you know if you have mastasis? (Spelling?) I keep seeing flu like symptoms can also be from that

I’m probably just being a little paranoid but I don’t want to be the reason my baby is sick.

Your breastmilk is the best protection for her. The only protection really.

I’ve had the stomach flu this week and my doctor said the best protection for my baby is my breastmilk. I called my mom to come over to watch her, but then I would wake up to feed her.

Breastmilk is the best way to protect her. She's already been exposed, it won't really help to have her separated at this point. Mastitis is red, hot, extremely painful with fever. You may have a clogged duct and that is why your boob is a bit tender - see if you can pinpoint the tenderness and then massage it and use a warm compress to clear the clog. If you don't clear the clog, it will turn into mastitis. Feel better soon!
