My husband is a stubborn disabled vet

Amanda

Hi all!

So first I’d like to say I met my husband after his service and I can’t imagine how difficult family life is for all you who are currently serving/ your SO is. You have all my praises!

My husband is retired from the navy. He was in for four years, he was supposed to be a nuke on a sub. He has a skin condition that’s kinda like super bad eczema and it turned out the chemicals in a submarine environment are not great for that! His skin got way worse, and he was able to get medical retirement.

The only treatment for him until a year ago was steroids, overuse of which causes osteoporosis. Aside from him being given in a lot of steroids while in the navy, his skin is permanently worse than before (so he continued to need them) and he has a broken sacrum (back of pelvis) from the osteoporosis.

He is is constant pain that makes him only able to work part time. He mentioned a few months ago he may be able to get disability from the VA but he is embarrassed (it’s not like he lost limbs in combat you know?) and he is afraid to go see if he qualifies for anything. This is all so foreign to me and I don’t know how to help him.

I’m just wondering if anyone can give advice, both on whether we could get any financial assistance since he is not able to work full time or in a field that could pay him decent wages, and how to give him a kick to go ask!

Thanks for reading!!
