No name symptom

I’m about to turn 19, but ever since I was about 15 i have gotten episodes of what is best explained to be short term memory loss. It happens randomly so I can’t give a specific trigger. The most I noticed is that it’ll happen after sometime after an event that catches me off guard happens. I don’t do any drugs and I’m not on any medication other than birth control. I’m diagnosed with anxiety and depression and have stopped going to counseling because of money issues. I don’t really know how to explain what an episode is like other than after i post this, I probably will completely forget I posted it within the next five mins. I remember basics like my name, age, where I live, but I can’t determine whats reality and what are just my thoughts. I get racing thoughts and if i try to remember what they were i feel like I’m making up a story. It’s very hard to explain but it’s scary and concerning. My close friends, boyfriend, and parents all know about this but it’s very frustrating and scary to forget about things within minutes of it happening. Has this happened to anyone or has anything similar happened?

Sounds like dissociation. Dissociation is basically a defense mechanism, when things get too stressful your brain tries to tune it out in order to save you from stress. Depending on the severity of the dissociation this can result in memory loss/black outs, feelings of being unreal or in a dream, feeling like your surroundings aren't real, spacing out/not being able to focus, etc.

Taking a hot shower can help with an episode. Basically anything to help you stay grounded. Like snapping a rubber band on your wrist, playing a game, drawing. Something to distract you from those unreal feelings and bring your attention back to the world. They can definitely be very distressing.

I looked into the dissociative disorders and dissociative amnesia and depersonalization symptoms are familiar to me. I was seeing a psychologist for depression and anxiety and let him know about those weird episodes I have and he said he’s never heard of something like that before. I don’t see him anymore due to money issues but these episodes make me distressed even though they happen once a month at most

When it's so bad that it interferes with your life (like it sounds like it is for you) then you might have a disorder. And you would need to talk to a psychiatrist or psychologist for diagnosis and treatment. There are a lot of different things that have dissociation as a symptom (like depression) but there are also disorders where it is the main thing happening (dissociative identity disorder, depersonalizations disorder)
