Can we trim newborn’s fingernails?

My newborn has very Long fingernails, I let her wear mittens however I was wondering if we can actually trim their nails? She’s only 5 days old.

They make baby fingernail clippers. Just be careful. Do it while they’re sleeping or very relaxed

Yes, although it was hard for me with my son when he was first born, so we used a little file instead the first couple of weeks.

the general recommendation is to file thier nails at first as they are very soft and brittle. Mine is 7 months  and i file them on a regular basis, did take me a few tried to get used to how to do this best. Just use the lighter side of a normal emery board and do it while sleeping until they get used to it.

If you're nervous to trim them, try filing them or trimming while they're asleep

Be VERY careful, their nails are flimsy and soft you don’t quite know sometimes if its nail or finger 😕 Almost took a chunk of skin off my babies finger because I couldnt tell. 
But yes, definitely clip them. Makes baby less dangerous to themselves if a mit comes off.

Yup. I was afraid to use clippers at first but found the emery boards didn’t work well. So I’ve been clipping when he’s asleep and it works well. For reference my son is 7wks old.
