Why is breast feeding so hard?

My baby was born almost a week ago and I got lucky that she latched immediately, but I have been struggling so much with it. I’m trying to power through and getting help from a lactation consultant at WIC but I can’t get her to latch on my whole nipple. It hurts so bad and I’m so raw. Anyone else been in the same boat as me? Anything that has helped you? I’m using the lanisoh cream.

Honestly, it's always hard in the beginning no matter what. Your nipples and areolas just aren't used to so much. But they WILL adjust and "toughen up." I used Bamboobease (sp?) balm and it helped a lot. Also if you're really raw, try using a nipple shield or pump and let someone give baby a bottle. I know how difficult it is those first few weeks, but I promise if you keep at it, baby will latch better, your boobs will adjust and it won't hurt anymore. You're doing a great job, mama!

I had the same problem with my daughter. I ended up using a nipple shield for the first few months, and it was a life saver!!

nipple shield helped me a lot!  it's gets easier as time goes on. read about dream feeding too, it helped a lot when I was so tired but the baby had to eat.

Everyone gets sore nipples in the beginning so you’re definitely not alone. Lanolin is great to help but unfortunately the only cure is for them to toughen up and they will over time! For now you could try a nipple shield to give them a break and let them heal a little.

Side note, I sliced my nipple with my Hospital bracelet after giving birth and then had to ensure the raw nipples on top of that. I thought I was going to die! So I feel ya girl!!!
