The best advice I think I ever got was to use your hand along with your mouth.  Wrap your hand around the base and only take the end into your mouth -  bonus points if you can pump your hand up and down while you work, but don't worry too hard about that, that's advanced.
The main thing is having your hand there keeps you in control.  He can't go any faster or deeper than you're comfortable with because your hand's in the way.  There are other benefits (it also makes it look like you're going deeper than you really are) but don't underestimate the control part.  You'll probably do a lot better too because you'll feel more comfortable.

I was nervous at first too but you just have to take it slow and do what your comfortable with.
