Birth control pill

I got a prescription for the birth control pill and my doctor said she would recommend taking it after my period, which should end in about 6 days. However, I would like to start taking it now because she didn't say anything at all like no you can't or this is unsafe or anything. Should I be OK to take it now/have any of you lady's been in maybe the same or a similar situation?
