What are your thoughts on cloth diapers?

My husband and I are trying for our first baby and are wanting to find ways to save money. I heard that they cost more upfront but will last a while. What is the best type of cloth diapers? and how do you clean them? What are your thoughts?

i use cloth at home and short errands and disposable when out for awhile or at other peoples house. i also use disposable at night.huge money saver. my baby is 5 months and I've spent less than 50 dollars on diapers. i bought a big pack of diapers on groupon for a steal. i also got some bum genuis with my kickback from baby r us registry. i use pocket diapers and i personally like them the best. i use a sprayer on a toilet to rinse them if really bad. i use free and clear detergent same i use for baby cloth and hang dry the diapers. i have a supply of about 20 so i do laundry every day or 2. other pros of cloth diapers i never have blow outs. money saver. never had diaper rash.

If you have the means to buy them outright and can easily wash and dry them, I think they are a great idea. A family I used to nanny for used them exclusively for their second. The mom was able to buy a lot of gently used ones from EBay. They installed a sprayer onto their toilet because after you change a poopy diaper you have to rinse all the poop off.

I have two kids.. almost three! and we do cloth diapers, I use BG free times...
1- For an easy clean you can buy disposable inserts, they look like a baby wipe, they catch the poop so you don't have to wash poop, I used this inserts for a month and it got to expensive. You can also buy a spray to take the poop off, I don't use that. 
2- a sink... like a farm one, are amazing to wash cloth diapers, my husband got me one a few weeks ago and the difference is amazing! 
3- you do a prewash and then a regular wash! always take off the poop before using your washer, if you dry your diapers under the sun, the soon will help with stains, I do this from spring to fall! 
4- I could be writing but I have two kids that need me! Look in the internet for more information or look on Facebook for Fluff Love! they have great tips!

I love my cloth and it's so much cheaper if you wash them yourself. I use best bottoms brand. We've spent maybe 150 in diapers in the last 5 months and aren't due to buy the next size inserts for probably 4 or 5 more months. We would have spent that money in 2-3 months. I do one load of diapers every 2-3 days, and since I sprung for a 2
30 dollar diaper sprayer for the poopy ones, I'll even wash her other laundry right along with the diapers, so it's not really much of a waste of water.
My daughter also had very sensitive skin and acid issues so she'll rash up really quick given a chance. We just don't have that issue in cloth.
We only use disposable when we're planning on being out of the house for a while.

I think they are gross but if I was on a budget I wouldn’t mind using them when I’m at home and using the regular diapers for outings/restaurants errand running.

With the cost of how much you wash them, it’s not much of a difference. Diapers aren’t very expensive

Honestly diapers arent that expensive. It’s probably the cheapest expense with our baby. We chose not to cloth diaper because once you run the numbers of extra loads of laundry, the water and electricity wasted wasn’t worth it. Plus working fulltime, it wasn’t ideal for our lifestyle / schedule.
