Learning to read is a life long process. if he can identify a hand full of sight words he should be fine. Just keep practicing. As a teacher I would recommend reading the same book again and again tracking every word with your finger. As he memorized the book leave words out here and there and ask him what it says. Yes he is just memorizing the story but this can help with word shape memory. As adults we don't read word for word our brain learns to recognize the shape of words to more quickly identify them. He will be fine! On another note boys sometimes take longer to learn to read. They are very physically minded sodas long as he's trying and making progress he should be okay. If his progress stalls or slows then you may look into a little outside help.

Talk to your child’s teacher about his progress if you’re concerned. Your question is difficult to answer as all 6 year olds will still be learning to read. Children continue to learn to read even through adolescence- they just learn to read and comprehend more difficult material at this age.

i learned to read at age 8..  i have a degree in mathematics. i struggling sometimes reading and i cannot spell  for my life.But i came out fine..my mom had me in tutoring everyday until 6th grade, summer school every year, until everything clicked. i was top 20 of my class.

I meant to vote yes. They will always be learning, so many new words and concepts are shown to them it’s hard to grasp sometimes. Just practice a bit more with her and I bet you’ll see improvement.

my sister refused to learn how to read and pretty much couldnt read in 1st grade and they made her take special lessons for a few years. shes very smart, just stubborn, and an excellent reader. once she learn how to read, she quickly surpassed her classmates and read at an advanced level. its not always about when you learn.

Kindergarten teacher here. It’s very normal for six year olds to still be learning to read!That being said, if you have concerns you should bring them to your child’s teacher. She should be able to help you understand your child’s development in reading and, more specifically, in broken down components of reading and writing development (like phonological and phonemic awareness, fluency and reading level amongst other things).
