In law issues ☹️

LL

So my in laws are Jewish and there is a superstition in Judaism about buying gifts for the baby before it arrives. I understand and respect their superstition but they were dead set on buying us the crib and dresser. They asked us to ‘reserve’ the items on the registry which you can’t do. Both my husband and I want to set them up before the baby is here so we’re not doing it with a newborn. We explained that there are other items they could get us if they wanted to wait but these are 2 items we wanted before and we were willing to buy them ourselves. I already have BAGS of baby clothes from my brother (he has 2 girls and I’m having a girl) that need to be washed and put away (the baby’s room doesn’t have a built in closet). So I really really want the dresser. And baby will sleep in our room for a while but Neither me or my husband want to be building a crib while we’re first time parents to a newborn (my in laws are NOT handy and wouldn’t be building the furniture for us).

Well unbeknownst to me my dad went out and bought the crib. I had told my step mom that the in laws wanted to buy that but I guess my dad never got the message. Now my MIL is upset and keeps letting my husband and I know how disappointed she is... This seems like such silly drama. There are still a ton of things on the registry. Am I being really rude and is respectful in saying they should pick something else?
