Affording Infertility Treatments?

Question

How do people do it?! We went to our first RE appointment yesterday, and just got the estimate. JUST testing alone for my husband and myself is $5,800+. I am absolutely devastated. That doesn’t even include any treatment. I live in Florida where infertility treatment is not required to be covered by insurance.
What do people do to get a baby? How does anyone afford this?! Please, I need guidance and advice because I am absolutely heartbroken.

Our RE gave us this and my husband was hesitant to sign up but if we got IVF we will give it a try.

Have them bill it under diagnostic testing, it should be covered under preventative medicine and only cost you a co-pay.

Our fertility doctor codes everything he can as being diagnostic. The only thing that isn’t covered are things that are obviously fertility specific such as certain meds and our IUIs. I also had to undergo tubal cannulation which is not covered but my doctor performed the procedure himself at a surgical center he has a stake in. 
A previous doctor wanted almost $2700 from us in testing. All those same tests turned out to be covered by my insurance because of how they were coded. 
I would find another doctor.

I’m in Florida as well with crappy insurance.    However it did cover all the testing (blood work, sperm Analysis, initial ultrasound and HSG) so you may want to confirm that your insurance will or won’t pay.   
Now we just take it one cycle at a time.    
2 rounds of Femera with trigger was $500 ish total.  This month we did our first IUI and it was $900 total.   We are just saving as much as we can and bracing to take one some credit card debt if we have to go with IVF.

I would search for a new doctor.  Those tests can easily be performed at another facility, even your obgyn and coded differently so that they don't cost as much.  That's outrageous.  I'm really sorry you're having to do this.  I just had my first set of blood work done this week.  I'm not sure what my out of pocket will be but usually for regular blood work my insurance covers 100% of it.  I had mine done at my gyno.

I'd call your insurance to check. Ours didn't cover treatment but it did cover diagnostic and testing.

What kind of testing are you having? That seems high... our consult was $280, hsg was $850, ultrasound was $250, blood-work for me was $700, but I can’t remember the semen analysis... $200 max. Over $2200. I’m in Michigan, the state is not required to pay for fertility treatments, but insurance does cover parts of the lab testing including the hsg and ultrasound. I have blue cross blue shield.

Our insurance covers half of most IVF up to $20,000. We are half way there and it's only our first IVF. Check to see if you can change your coverage. It's not mandatory in our state, but Blue Cross does it anyway

have you spoken with your insurance company to see if it covers any type of diagnostic testing? my insurance covers diagnostic testing but covers no fertility treatments or medications. all my IUIs have been of pocket. we are supposed to start IVF but it's just on the back burner because that's 15,000. honestly I wish I wouldn't wasted $4000 on the last two IUIs. I really believe they would work. I've looked into adoption but private adoption is 30000.
