How does Valentines day work?

Hello ladies, I'm originally from Germany and studying in the US. I've been with my (American) boyfriend for almost 5 months and I feel like I should do something for Valentines day. It's not really a thing where I come from (more laughed at for being a florists PR-stunt). Do I have to get chocolates and stuff or is anything romantic ok? What do you do for your SO? I would love some inspiration.

anything romantic that's meaningful for you two is awesome. Make a card, give him a gift, make dinner. Going out to eat that day is generally a bad idea according to a high end restaurant chef I know. High prices, extra demanding customers, fixed menus.

I’m American and my husband is german, we live in Germany. Valentine’s Day is different for every couple, no matter where your from or what your traditions are. Personally for me, I’d get my boyfriend (obviously before I was married and lived in the states) a card and maybe something small, depending on what he had planned for me. Maybe make him a special dinner or dessert at home, a bottle of his favorite cologne or a couples massage somewhere. For me, it was always bigger for the guy to do something more for the girl. I always got a card, chocolates or flowers and a nice dinner out. Those were young boyfriend/girlfriend gifts.

Its just a day to show your boyfriend, friends, family, how much you love them. Even though you should do that everyday. Anyways you can get him whatever you like or anything that may interest him. Typical gifts for valentines are teddy bears, chocolate, cards, roses, or a romantic dinner or sex lol. But like I say its what interest  him.

The best valentine gifts can’t be bought. Frame a nice photo of the two of you, write him a thoughtful letter, plan to make one of his favorite meals and watch a movie you both love. Valentines is VERY commercialized. The more your gift comes from the heart, the better. Anyone can run to the store and grab chocolates, a card, or flowers. Think about where your relationship has taken you and think of something meaningful. For instance...my husband loves seeing different birds in our yard, so last year I built him a bird feeder. 😊

You don't have to do anything that you don't want to - and as the girl no presents are normally expected from you, the most would be a sweet card.  It's more a holiday for men to buy flowers and single ladies to buy themselves chocolates on sale the day after - it's what I loved about the holiday while single.
